Limnology Internship

Carlander-Bachman Limnology Internship

The Iowa State University Limnology Laboratory (ISULL) is sponsoring an ongoing internship program for college and university students seeking research experience in the aquatic sciences. This is a paid, one-year program, and can carry academic credit from this Research 1 university. The deadline for application is March 15, 2008. Interviews will be conducted at the ISULL in Ames, IA Early April, 2008.

Under the direction and supervision of Professor John A. Downing, ISULL performs aquatic ecosystem research through its in-the-field sampling capabilities, analytical laboratory facilities, and professional data analysis. Successful applicants will work on a variety of aquatic ecosystems, from tiny lakes to large rivers. Our laboratory performs standard testing procedures for analysis of biological, microbiological, and nutrient, in lake, stream, river, and wetland ecosystems. We also use geographic information systems (GIS) and watershed models to analyze how practices in a watershed affect that watershed’s lake or stream.

This program offers a unique opportunity to work under the mentorship of scientists and professionals to gain a broad range of practical field and laboratory experience in water quality research. The internship also provides an opportunity for students to develop and conduct individual research projects. At the end of the program, participants develop a poster, a presentation, and submit a written report of their work.

Both undergraduate and graduate students are eligible. Students receive a stipend for a 9 or 12-month internship. Candidates must have full-day availability and be available for overnight travel Monday through Thursday. Applicants with class and/or work experience with biological, water chemistry or habitat assessment sampling techniques are preferred. Students register for internship credits through Iowa State University (or their home institution).

Students interested in this internship should send a letter of intent, resume and unofficial copy of their transcripts, preferably by e-mail, to:

PhD in Environmental Sciences

Pursue a Ph.D. in Environmental Sciences at Wright State University

The Environmental Sciences Ph.D. program at Wright State University in Dayton, Ohio invites applicants for Fall 2008 admission. The program is designed to provide skills and training to better understand and solve complex environmental problems, such as those caused by anthropogenic pollutants, invasive species, habitat fragmentation and loss of biodiversity, that can affect both human and ecosystem health. Our students receive training in preparation for careers in academia, state and federal agencies, industry, and non-profit organizations.
Through a rigorous core curriculum and dissertation research, our interdisciplinary program is designed to broadly expose students to both traditional and emerging areas of environmental sciences, and offers the ability to focus on research in a more defined area. Our program includes faculty in the departments of Biological Sciences, Earth and Environmental Sciences, Chemistry, Physics, Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, Pharmacology and Toxicology, and Mathematics and Statistics.

The program offers competitive stipends for graduate students ($22,000 for Fall 2008) along with a waiver of tuition costs for full-time students. Applicants are also eligible for consideration to receive a prestigious Yellow Springs Instruments (YSI) Fellowship for the first year in the program, awarded to highly qualified students enrolling for Fall 2008.

Not being the recipient of other scholarships, Italian or foreign.
Academic requirements

In order to be admitted into a 1st level Specializing Master program, applicants must possess a university degree equivalent to a Bachelor of Science degree, which is approximately equivalent to three or four years after secondary school, depending on the number of secondary school years.

For further information, please visit the Entry requirements page.

Scholarships Selection criteria

Applicants will be selected based on their previous academic career and on their Curriculum Vitae.

Amount of the scholarship

The gross amount of the Alessandria Campus scholarship is 10.000 Euro for the complete period. The exact net sum is dependent upon the individual tax conditions of each student, which can be verified only upon the arrival of the student.

The amount of the scholarship will not be increased in case the student will need more time to graduate than indicated.

The allocation of the scholarship is dependent upon the submission, within 10 days from the arrival in Italy of the student, of the original documentation, which must correspond with the documentation attached to the online form (see the “Selection outcomes” section below).

Payment of the scholarship occurs periodically. The first instalment is dependent upon the possession of the relevant documentation (residence permit, Italian fiscal code, and bank account in the name of the scholarship recipient), all obtainable upon arrival in Italy; for this reason, the first instalment is not paid at the moment of arrival at the Politecnico di Torino, but in the course of the following month.

Requirements to maintain the scholarship

Given that it is not possible to combine the benefits received from more than one scholarship, students who are assigned another study grant while receiving the Alessandria Campus scholarship must promptly notify the Politecnico di Torino.

Payment of the scholarship will be suspended if the academic performance of the recipient does not meet a satisfactory level.

Deadlines:
1st application period: 8 p.m. (Italian time) on May 25th, 2008.
2nd application period: 8 p.m. (Italian time) on July 28th, 2008.

Masters-level Graduate Research Assistantship in Fish Ecology

Graduate Research Assistantship in Fish Ecology
sponsored by NOAA’s Center for Coastal Monitoring & Assessment, University of the Virgin Islands’ Center for Marine and Environmental Studies, and the USGS State Partnership Program

Project Title: Identifying ontogenetic movements and habitat use of juvenile Nassau grouper and other fishes inside and outside marine protected areas in the USVI.

Project start date/ duration: May 2008/ 2 years

Project location: St. John and St. Thomas, U. S. Virgin Islands

Stipend: summer (full-time 3 month $6,000), academic year (half-time 9 months $9,000)

Project Summary: We are seeking a motivated graduate student to work with UVI and NOAA scientists on a joint acoustic telemetry project to track several commercially exploited fish species, including Nassau grouper, through their daily home range and across ontogenetic habitat shifts. The project will also quantify growth and mortality rates for selected species, both inside and outside marine protected areas (MPAs). These data will provide important information on fine-scale space-use patterns, behavioral responses to seascape structure, and the efficacy of MPAs for individual species.
The graduate student will conduct repeated scuba and snorkel fish surveys, help capture, tag and release a variety of fish, conduct manual fish tracking from a small boat, and assist in routine maintenance, data acquisition and analyses of movement data. The graduate student will also contribute to analyses of coral reef monitoring data collected by NOAA, UVI and territorial partners.

Basic Requirements: The successful applicant will have a BS degree in Biology or related field, be comfortable with basic statistical analyses, be a certified SCUBA diver, be able to operate a small boat, and be willing to work for long hours in the field under a variety of weather and sea conditions.

Application procedure: All applicants will need to write a letter of interest, submit a current CV and be accepted into the University of the Virgin Islands Master’s of Marine and Environmental Science (MMES) degree program. MMES application package can be found at http://mmes.uvi.edu/ or contact Dr. Sylvia Vitazkova (svitazk@uvi.edu, tel: 340-693-1427). The application deadline is March 3, 2008. For more information on the research program contact Dr. Rick Nemeth (rnemeth@uvi.edu, tel: 340-693-1381) or Dr. Simon Pittman (Simon.Pittman@noaa.gov, tel: 340-693-1179).
